Icarus plot

"Truth is the new banned substance"

The brutal worlds of international sports and politics collide violently on screen in this documentary masquerading as a thriller. While investigating the obscure world of illegal doping in sport, amateur cyclist and filmmaker Fogel links up with the renegade Russian scientist and Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, an expert and implementer of his country's "anti-doping" program. When Fogel and Rodchenkov expose a major international sports scandal, a doping investigation leads to a worldwide cat-and-mouse game.

Great documentary. Yes, it feels like a thriller and yes, you could see this as a minus, were it not that I don't have the feeling that the makers want to thicken the story or make something much more exciting than what is in reality has happened. In fact, I don't think the threat has even come to the fore yet.

Anyway, the whole setup is already super interesting. Watching what doping does to you is already something that 90% of sports-loving viewers don't know because of the naivety, so I was already interested in that. What happens next is simply unimaginable.

Best documentary I've seen this year.

Shocking Netflix documentary, which brings a major international doping scandal to light. Very skillfully put together by director Bryan Fogel, who starts the project quite naively and on a small scale, but gradually opens up a huge cesspool. Fortunately, everything stays on track thanks to a subtle and well-thought-out approach. Exciting, fascinating and gripping, in short; everything a good documentary should be.

Beautiful documentary in which a doping experiment by an amateur cyclist suddenly turns into an exciting and humiliating registration of the well-known Russian doping scandal. The pivot in this is Grigory Rodchenkov. In the beginning he is a funny guy, who makes it a habit to Skype with the bare-chested creator Bryan Fogel and gives advice on how to inject testosterone as painlessly as possible. Strange, he is the head of the anti-doping agency that has cheated things in Sochi with an ingenious system.

Anyway, Grigory comes over to America and after the whistleblower action has started, he becomes anxious and for good reason. One of his closest colleagues dies of 'a heart attack', yes. The dubious role of the Russian government is of course also discussed. The documentary does not feel finished, in my opinion we are still in the middle of these doping vicissitudes and the end is far from in sight. Anyway, still a great and very interesting documentary!
