In-depth portrait of perhaps the most idolized sportsman of his generation. Fascinating archival footage and commentary from key players in Maradona's story - including Diego himself - show how the brilliant, but very insecure street urchin Diego had such a hard time with the pressure and media attention that he had to play with the flamboyant, self-assured alter-ego Maradona on came up. "With Diego I would travel to the end of the world, but with Maradona I would not take a step," said Fernando Signorini, Maradona's personal trainer during his heyday at Napoli. Director Asif Kapadia shows the combination of deceit and genius with which he took revenge for the Falklands War lost by his homeland during the World Cup 86 and how football club Napoli transformed from a widely reviled relegation candidate to champions of Italy and Europe. It also shows why and how he suddenly fell off his pedestal after he flawlessly scored a penalty against Italy in the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup in Napoli. can make or break a simple kid, as well as a best-of and worst-of career (including the infamous charge by The Butcher of Bilbao[/ url] and [url=https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1xwd0o]Maradona's merciless act of revenge after the 1984 Copa Del Rey final).

While I am really a big football fan, I have only now seen this well-regarded documentary. The death of Maradona was of course the trigger for this. Colorful person, with a typical career. What he has done with Napoli and the Argentina national team is of course wonderful.

But.. I can never stand that emotional exaggeration. Maradona is just not the best footballer ever. That's always a totally overrated statement. You are the best now. No one from the past can compete with what Messi and Ronaldo have done in this era and in the future there will surely be another one that is even better. In Diego's era, it would undoubtedly have been the best, but like everything in life, such a thing is temporary.

Asif Kapadia's two previous documentaries, 'Senna' and 'Amy', moved me to tears. They imbued me with the potential of the documentary genre. Unfortunately, the comparison cannot stand 'Diego Maradona'.

How so? Perhaps because the footballer, very different from Senna and Amy, makes himself less likable. He is admittedly a victim of his poor background, of what his environment (once arrived in Naples seems to be: the world) expects of him and above all of his inferiority complex that he hides behind a mythical self on the one hand and cocaine on the other, but still… you sees in the documentary a man who is terrified of introspection, and that arouses compassion, but also anger, because there were undoubtedly ways out of his fateful demise.

Apart from the person Maradona, it is remarkable that Kapadia does not dwell extensively on what the man had experienced under FC Barcelona, nor do you get any idea of his career before that. As a spectator you can therefore not get rid of the impression that the censorship of the then still living legend hangs over the film, as if everything was not allowed to be told? And that of course destroys the integrity of the documentary...

Well, insightful and moving, not impressive.

3.25*
