Whitney plot

"All the music. All the stories. All the answers."

Whitney Houston broke more music industry records than any other singer in history. With more than 200 million album sales worldwide, she was the only artist to reach number one in the US charts with seven consecutive singles. She also starred in several blockbuster films before her career gave way to erratic behavior, scandal and death at the age of 48. A portrait of Whitney Houston and her family, this documentary sheds new light on Houston's life path.

Well, after Amy about Amy Winehouse, I ventured into this one about Whitney Houston. The world was at Whitney's feet in the 90s. She was an absolute world star and rivaled other stars such as Madonna, although with a different genre of songs, but she was also a phenomenon in the broad spectrum of pop. Her voice was incredibly clear and steady, almost unprecedented.

But the toll of success with the paparazzi, the circling money-hungry vultures, family problems, etc. was also extremely heavy for her. Just like the documentary about Amy, it was also decided to name the documentary with her first name, as if to portray the world star as an ordinary everyday girl. And she was. The gospel songs in church were beautiful, that pureness, that innocence too...

Good documentary that neatly shows it all: her rise and fall. Not boring. Her interview with Diane Sawyer was punishing. Also hallucinating how she found herself in a dilemma because, according to the black community, she started making pop songs that were too white. This "us versus them thinking" unfortunately applies to both communities. Whitney Houston, a pop diva with a fabulous voice that should never be forgotten.

She had a heavenly voice, a divine beauty and a golden smile. How did things go so wrong with Whitney? This is pretty much the answer that this biopic, released with the support of her family, wanted to bring. There were two things: she was in a toxic relationship with Bobby Brown that made her unhappy with infidelity and jealousy. In addition, not everything can be traced back to Brown; she gave in to her addictions and succumbed to them. I did not know the facts about her abuse by Dee Dee Warwick and about her lesbian relationship, and the last years of her life also passed me by during that period. This was the most pathetic part of her existence: being broke, neglecting her daughter and, as an absolute low point, those comeback performances where her voice was barely recognizable and she was only a shadow of who she once was. You could read her "mal-de-vivre" on her face...

A good documentary that also comes across as honest. I certainly wasn't looking for a chronological overview of her famous songs. You get a lot of insight into who she was and the interviewees do not avoid the more difficult issues. It is remarkable that Bobby Brown also wanted to be in front of the camera, although he was less willing when the subject of "drugs" came up. Her death remains a shame but her life had meaning... maybe not in her eyes but she gave the world a lot... we all danced, loved or shed tears to her songs.

In the documentary Whitney: Can I Be Me (Film, 2017) - MovieMeter.nl they try to get into the mind of Whitney Houston. With her secret lesbian love that did not fit in with the image of her Catholic family, the pressure of showbiz, the violence of her husband Bobby and drug use. The documentary Whitney gives a broader picture with many testimonies from her close family members. Although they prefer not to discuss some of those issues. Which is sometimes understandable about a family member, of course. A documentary is quite complete, although you can still ask yourself what you want to show. Whitney as a music star or the person Whitney. Although you cannot see the two separately. Like many other stars such as Elvis or Amy Winehouse, Whitney also fell under the pressure of success, surrounded by family and friends who were blinded by showbiz and therefore did not help their beloved star enough when he really needed it. . A beautifully made documentary, although the music and magic of Houston could be highlighted a little more. So that we should not forget how good she was as a singer.
