The Dawn Wall plot

At the heart of Yosemite National Park is El Capitan, a tall granite boulder whose smoothest section, the Dawn Wall, is considered by experts to be the world's toughest climb. Tommy Caldwell saw no impassable area, but a puzzle nearly a mile high. In "The Dawn Wall" we follow him and Kevin Jorgeson in their historic route to the top. A bizarre course that, after they had already made several attempts in the years before, takes weeks.

Mountain climbing, not really a sport I'm interested in. But thanks to the rave reviews and the fact that I was in the mood for beautiful, soothing images, I finally saw this one. Superb from start to finish.

Especially because Tommy Caldwell is a very good guy who grants you all the happiness in the world. The passion with which he can talk about 'his' mountain is almost moving and the amount of preparation that goes into it is impressive. Never knew something like this could take years. Bizarre that Tommy and Kevin, his partner, only sleep on an aluminum frame hundreds of meters high. It would run really thin on me.

That happens a few times anyway while watching this documentary. Almost abnormal how they seem to stick to that wall like a spider, fingertips until they bleed. And if you fall, try again and again, admirable. You get to see a lot about Tommy's life, especially the hostage situation caused amazement. Traumatizing, but it hasn't stopped Tommy from pursuing his dream. Fascinating, feel-good documentary that is also a bit exciting.
