Touching the Void plot

"The closer you are to death. The more you realize you are alive."

Joe Simpson camps with climbing partner Simon Yates at the foot of the Siula Grande, a 6356 meter high mountain peak in the middle of the South American Andes. They have chosen the extremely difficult west face of the mountain as their target. After several days they manage to reach the top. During the descent disaster strikes: just below the top Simpson falls several meters and crushes his knee.

This movie just blew my socks off (and it's winter, so thick woolen...).

The images burst from the screen and you really feel for the deceased Joe who desperately and badly injured tries to return to base camp. His feelings of agony and abandonment cut through the marrow and bone.

Very strong fare and in my opinion a MUST SEE for every film lover.

9/10.

A wonderful Docu-Drama that will not leave you indifferent.

Highly recommended

This documentary shows the two climbers themselves in the studio telling their experiences step by step, and two alpinists show what exactly happened in re-enacted scenes. The presence of the two real protagonists gives Touching the Void a high degree of authenticity. Yet this gripping report by two mountaineers in distress does not quite appeal to me. Beautiful images, but there is no tension because you know how it ends from the beginning. The duration of the film could also be shortened a bit.

6/10

I'm kind of in my mountaineering period, it seems. Purely in terms of movies, haven't seen me in real life - but now in a week or two Everest, The Summit and now seen this Touching the Void. Like The Summit, this is a documentary; this is about two British climbers who are going to climb a remote mountain in the Andes. Given the format, it is immediately clear how it will end, since both climbers and their base camp travel companion all have an extensive discussion. Again an adventure with many hardships, but here too the reconstructions work not always as tasty, and the tension and drama is less present since it is immediately clear that they will all survive anyway. It is clear that it is a risky undertaking, but for this layman it all felt very unprepared. Still a nice adventure, but also too many talking heads and mediocre reconstructions; it didn't hit me like the summit did. Although the moment with Boney M was a nice piece of humor.
