"A romantic murder-mystery drama!"
A promising young actress is murdered by her distant husband who is jealous of her young lovers. The next day, writer Robert Tisdall finds her washed up body on the beach. As he runs to get help, he is seen by two witnesses who suspect he is the killer. Tisdall is arrested by the police on suspicion of murder, but during the trial he manages to escape and runs away. Now he has to prove he's innocent...

Excellent Hitchcock thriller based on the classic theme of a young man [Derrick de Marnay] who is wrongly accused of murder and tries to prove his innocence with the help of a wayward, resourceful young woman [Nova Pillbeam]. Hitchcock reveals who the killer is in the opening and after one of the most acclaimed shots of Hitchcock's career , the killer is finally exposed. Hitchcock makes his first recognizable appearance as a photojournalist in this fast-paced thriller. The visit to a children's party is almost as brilliant as the brilliant denouement. Can not be missed!

Although not the suspense of his toppers, Hitch is somewhat recognizable, if only for the many coincidences (often funny) that give the story an important twist.
Very easy to follow, too predictable this time, not demanding from the actors and a bit bland at times.
A 3.5 is perhaps a bit much, but the master of suspense has already given us so much film fun that we have to round up.

From Hitchcock's British period, which is less known than his American period. And within its British period, this is now not the most famous film. But of his lesser-known British films, I think this Young and Innocent stands out in terms of cinematography and general entertainment. The highlight and technical tour de force is the scene in the ballroom, as has been said here repeatedly. Although there are other beautiful things to see. I also think the opening on the beach is magical. A strong start and a strong end is of course always included, especially if the middle part is also not too bad. A thriller with a splash of black comedy and Hitchcock is a master at that. Definitely worth reviewing this 'best of the British rest'.
