Much, much better than Fallen Angel (1945), which I saw a few days earlier. That film was characterized by a, in my opinion, lame mystery plot, melodrama and soapy romance. It didn't interest me that much, although the last part of that film made up for it a bit.

This film cuts right to the chase, with a violent and bitter detective, shady criminals and many dingy back rooms with little light shining through the windows. Look, then I immediately feel a lot better at home. The plot is somewhat comical, but that makes it all the more entertaining.

I just don't know what to think of Gene Tierney. In some ways she has something human and cute, but on the other hand she is the one who sometimes pushes the film in the over-the-top drama direction. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't fit in a film that otherwise avoids that. The film is human anyway, characters seem to get a little more depth than usual. It does work. I can give this a small 4*, especially because of the fine playing of Andrews and the criminals were also nice and evil.

I have no idea whether it was due to the transfer or whether the film is simply quite low-budget, but the film was full of dirt and specks and the sound was not great. Think transfer problems with that DVD box, because Fallen Angel and Night and The City also had it somewhat. In any case, it concerns this box

Preminger has created a solid film noir here with an exciting and plausible progression.

Yet here too the ending is somewhat abrupt and slightly disappointing and not actually up to the level of what preceded it.

There is good acting by almost all the actors on the front page, with of course beautiful Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews in the lead, but Gary Merrill and Karl Malden are also good in their roles.

Otto Preminger, who previously brought the same main actors with "Laura", is certainly one of his better films here.

Good film about a cop who doesn't always follow the rules and gets into trouble because of it. An excellent plot that is entertaining throughout. The main character with his inner dilemmas comes out well here. Dana Andrews' excellent acting certainly contributes to this.
