During World War I, Jimmy and Fred become friends. Jimmy is a shy and scared clerk and Fred works at the circus. They both have a crush on the beautiful woman Rose Duffy. Jimmy overcomes his fear and shyness and joins the army. Years later, the war is over and Jimmy decides to become a mobster. He marries Rose, but when she finds out he's a gangster, she gets him arrested. To make ends meet, Rose takes a job in Fred's circus. He has now become the owner himself. Jimmy thinks the two are having an affair and escapes from prison to kill Fred.
