The Killing plot

"In all its fury and violence..."

Johnny Clay has a plan. After spending 5 years in prison on Alcatraz, he decides that if he does commit crimes, he'd better make sure the proceeds are worth the risk of punishment. He devises a cunning plan to steal a large sum of money from the local racetrack. The only flaw in his plan is that he doesn't take into account the greedy wife of one of the cashiers and her boyfriend.

Surprisingly good heist film, by the then virtually unknown director Stanley Kubrick. Wouldn't really become a big name until later, but his talent is already clearly visible here. This is way above the average fifties crime film. Noir elements are there, but camera work looks a lot more modern and less dingy than we are used to in the genre.

First real business card of the then 28-year-old director who would become one of the big names from the sixties.

'The Killing' (1956) is one of Stanley Kubrick's earliest films. Although it is at first your average film noir, there is more than enough to enjoy the way this heist thriller is designed.

In particular, the non-linear story, in which some scenes are repeated from different perspectives, has had a major influence on Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Jackie Brown'.

Those who watch later films like Coppola's 'The Godfather', Lumet's 'Dog Day Afternoon', Cameron's 'Terminator 2' and Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' will recognize quotes from 'The Killing'.

That ending at the airport... I should also swallow and then try to go home very quietly... great anticlimax this.

Great movie, even before that. Recommended.
