Seen in the Sneak on Tuesday. As with many mafia stories, I have a hard time empathizing with the characters. The whole hand-clapping thing, the backroom politics, the dealings with other neighborhoods... it's just not my world. In addition, in general the characters are just not sympathetic and while some pity is cultivated for the women (domestic violence, women's oppression) the irony is all the greater that these same women have exactly the same dominant behavior show once they have knocked the men off the throne.

And then how they get their way... that moment, for example when they empty a cart full of offal for a Jewish shopkeeper who does not want to cooperate with their plans. It's presented as something funny, a cheeky way to win people over. But let's face it, this is just bullying, and these ladies end up terrorizing the neighborhood. And then that twist that suddenly came around the corner, where that dark woman had planned everything far in advance... totally unnecessary and unbelievable.

No, the screenplay is neither too believable nor too good. I give the three stars because I had a good time (if you don't take it too seriously, the film is quite acceptable), but especially the atmosphere of 1970s New York is beautifully captured: good decors, beautiful street scenes and fine soul music . And that makes up for a lot.

Nothing expected, partly because the film was not really well received, but I had a great time with it! Stories like this have of course often been filmed and for that reason I didn't look for originality. McCarthy in a serious role was not disappointing at all, in fact I would like to see her more often in more serious roles. ?

The pace is pleasant, the 1970s setting is beautifully portrayed and a soundtrack that I am considering purchasing on vinyl. ?

Is The Kitchen only positive? No, unfortunately not. Some scenes are cut off very abruptly and built up tension is not held for long. The twist at the end was unnecessary and I'm also starting to get a little tired of the fact that suddenly almost all commercial new movies have to use this "trick".

In short: An anything but perfect film, but at the same time there is also plenty to enjoy and it certainly does not feel like a waste of time.

Reasonable film in which three women take over the criminal work of their men when they end up in prison. This mafia film is not exactly stable in tone and the characters are not really credible. Yet the whole looks easy because of the fine cast, excellent decoration and nice soundtrack.
