Dark duos.

The latest Netflix production is a crime film intended for Robert Redford and Paul Newman many years ago. As is often the case with movies, things are often different. The now 64-year-old Kevin Costner looks a day older, which fits nicely with the role of retired Texas Ranger. The ever-interesting Woody Harrelson is his sidekick on the hunt for Bonnie & Clyde, the legendary 1930s criminal duo. But which duo is the darkest?

The story is therefore based on true facts, although you can of course ask yourself where the truth ends and the fiction begins. The fact is that the ending of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow may be realistically depicted in the film. Sufficient photo and film material from this end has therefore been preserved for an accurate reconstruction. After thirteen murders and several robberies and burglaries, their end was bloodily settled.

Less well known is the story of the men responsible for this, Frank Hamer and Maney Gault. Meticulous or not, The Highwaymen succeeded in its goal. From the point of view of these two fighters, there is little to understand about the success status of the famous outlaws at the time. Costner and Harrelson form a fine duo that is evenly matched, but there is no sign of verbal fireworks. Two annoyed elderly men, however, also work.

Sometimes the film wants to rely too much on anecdotes and the continuously present threat, but only suggestion is a bit too meager for such a long running time. The few moments when there is action, this is fine but too thinly dosed. However, the film is well made and the protagonists know how to hold the attention well. Although not much happens, it is often emphasized that Bonnie & Clyde are cowardly crooks and everyone knows the outcome. Costner and Harrelson will keep you on your toes.

Precisely because of the slow tempo, even with long dialogues, the film has a pleasant suction power

both Kostner and Harrelson act strongly. Instead of in Bonnie & Clyde, the film now follows

emphatically two cops chasing after the two famous bank robbers while Bonnie and Clyde sporadically come into the picture. By the way, the bandits got there for me as an elusive couple

a more mysterious charge. The final was almost identical to the one in Bonnie & Clyde.

I really enjoyed Highwaymen. Not least from the experienced rotten Harrelson and Costner who did very well. They take the film in tow and keep the level up. It is true that the pace of the film is very slow, but that didn't annoy me for a second. On the contrary. I enjoyed it because it gave the film an extra quality injection. Not a trigger-happy action film, but just the tranquility and the slow build-up create a fantastic atmosphere. The 1930s are very well represented with the cool costumes, hats and of course the cars. Gaunt and the grumpy Hamer make a good rusty duo with some sarcasm here and there.

As far as I'm concerned, the tension also remained because of the secret atmosphere of the dangerous duo Bonnie and Clyde. The ending was a minor explosion of gunshots and was in stark contrast to the rest of the film. The focus is not on Bonnie and Clyde and this angle is original.
