Son of a Gun plot

"Everyone gets what they deserve"

19-year-old JR is incarcerated for a minor crime. He soon learns the harsh realities of prison life. The keyword is protection. By coincidence, he falls under the care of Australia's most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch. But protection is not free. When JR is back at large, he has to do Lynch and his crew a favor.

Nice.

Not a film that competes for an originality prize, but wins points because of the tight execution. The bit of prison film in the beginning, the crime in the middle, the touch of humor in between and the twist at the end. In the hands of a mediocre director it would probably have been a boring film, but Avery knows how to spice it up enough.

Visually it's okay, but not very special. Musically it is. Nice and striking use of music. From the ending song (the song itself isn't very special, but it's nicely used) to a bit of industrial at the party, the music always manages to add something. Most striking at the arms dealer of course, with a true mellow/happy hardcore medley. I have no idea how that got into this Australian film, some 20 years after the genre was at its peak, but I had a blast. Even if, according to all good clichés, it was brought in a marginal way.

Acting is also more than decent. McGregor, Thwaites and to a lesser extent Vikander all play at a high level. The pace is also nice and the thin layer of humor works quite well. In any case, it ensures that it never gets boring or starts to drag, despite the fact that the course is already fairly fixed from the start.

So very nice in-between. It's not much more, but Avery does have talent. It's been quiet around him for a while, hopefully he can prove himself a second time.

3.5*

Fascinating crime film that easily looks away. Also quite strong acting.

Good action movie, but a bit boring at the beginning. At some point it gets exciting. I do find a number of things illogical, but if you look through them, you get a good average action film.

After all, all clichés pass. You can already predict who will die and who will not. And who will be left in the end. Anyway. Not bad at all, but I've seen better ones in this genre.
