Not bad, but not exactly great either. I've seen better giallos. But....it has to be said. That Barbara Bouchet is quite the killer. I thought that scene at the beginning where she showed herself naked in front of the very timid boy was one of the most beautiful scenes in the film. The last fifteen minutes - the denouement - was also nice, of course, but it was very predictable.

This is the 5th film I have seen by Fulci, of which I thought Zombi 2 (1979) was by far the best.

Rating: 3½ stars (including an extra ½ star for Patrizia)

Fulci.

Even though this is only my second film with the great man, I don't think I'll ever really become friends with him. I don't like these types of older films, even though I can see why other people are fans of them. This film has its strongest points, but they are held back by its weaker points.

In any case, it's hard for me to ignore the dub, which also seems to be completely intentional. The film takes itself quite seriously, and also touches on some pretty heavy topics. Throwing in those uncomfortably loud voices is not really beneficial. However, this is not necessarily something that this film gets wrong, this is something that a lot of films from the 70s and 80s do wrong. Yet it still irritates me every time.

Visually there are some nice images, but these are mainly due to the beautiful, sultry atmosphere that the location brings. The team behind the direction of this film chooses the beautiful places very precisely, and in addition, some scenes in between are also quite grisly, creating a special and very unpleasant atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the acting is of a very low level and the film has a lot of characters that are annoying. In any case, the acting is exaggerated and unrealistic, and some murder scenes are too transparent, meaning they have not survived the test of time. There is no truly oppressive atmosphere, and the story has too few surprises to keep you interested.

As a film it works towards a finale that gives a nice emotional charge, but cannot outweigh a rather slow and lethargic film that goes on for too long. Some scenes really don't seem to go over. The general fatigue that the film gave me meant that I never really got into the film and therefore found it difficult to enjoy it. Nice for the enthusiast, but I'm not one of them.

Good one from Fulci... a rural serial killer movie with a restless and heavy climate that was well put together throughout its entire length. The fact that this is about a child murderer makes it a bit bleaker. Contrary to his habits, it never becomes too shocking because this is still part of his pre-horror period. The scene in which a bored rich man's daughter stark naked appears to seduce an underage boy is the most dubious scene in the film. What was that good for? The whodunnit kept me guessing until the end and the cross-pollination with the drama genre works particularly well. It does not surprise me that this Fulci is well appreciated. PS / the poster spoiler well, luckily I only realized that after watching it.
