Make a dental appointment on Monday; tooth enamel is cracked.

Brrr, what a terrible setback. I like sentimental movies (check my voices!), but this is going too far for me. Everything feels so fake, so constructed in this film. Since I'm too lazy to write reviews myself these days, I'll stick to a few freely translated quotes from the NY times review:

"Love Actually is like an indigestible Christmas pudding of epic proportions (...). The beautiful opening of the film, spoken by Hugh Grant, makes you almost fall for this banal sentiment. But the idea love is rendered superficially and dishonestly in Love Actually, its sweet atmosphere masks a bitter cynicism about real human emotions that is not covered here.(...) But it is unlikely that any particular insight was intended Love Actually is a patchwork of contrived naughtiness and forced morals, ending the way it began: with hugs and kisses at an airport (where returning passengers might express their relief after seeing a movie like this one). The loose ends are neatly trimmed - the same way you tie up a garbage bag and deposit it."

The above pretty much sums up my feelings after seeing this film. Too bad, because they are all good actors, but for romance of this banal level you might as well set up GTST. Half for Mr. bean. 1*

Sometimes a cynical jerk like me sometimes softens. Usually at the end of December, but also when my Honeywell indicates 30.5 degrees and with a cold Corona within reach. And then this movie on, a really nice surprise. Very nicely played and despite the many stories, everyone gets enough time and background to live with. It's not very in-depth, but as a viewer I quickly became emotionally involved because of the strong pacing and actually all the actors where the fun splashes off the screen. Especially the story of Firth and the Portuguese woman who don't understand each other and I also liked the most, but Grant and his co-worker also had a certain cuteness. This is of course a fairytale world, but with genuine emotions and sometimes it is quite nice to be there. Sometimes you just need that as a person. Nice soundtrack further on and occasionally beautifully shot (as that Portuguese runs away behind such a fence and slides along with the camera, great shot). 4.0*.

Too many plot lines, too many clichés, too much Christmas, too much excess, too many cringe-inducing moments, too many people... it's all too much, except humor, which is far too little in this far too tiring film.
