"The Two M-M-Marvels Of Our Age In The Wonder Musical Of The World!"
They perform in nightclubs and Lorelei, the blond of the two, is out to hook a rich man. A wimpy millionaire's son gives her a ring and wants to marry her in Europe. Her colleague is allowed on the boat to protect Lorelei from the advances of other passengers. Her soon-to-be's father is against the marriage and sends in a private detective to take compromising photos of Lorelei.

Jane Russell was paid at least ten times as much, but it's Marilyn who became a big star. She wasn't the first Hollywood blonde, and of course her hair color wasn't, but she created a character that would often be imitated. The tabloid press jumped on her private life. Louis Paul Boon based the character Beauty Kitt on her in The Bird of Paradise, and Madonna imitated her in the music video for Material Girl.
It's a burlesque comedy with a dubious moral: a girl has to look attractive to hook a millionaire. Lorelei is like a magpie that preys on all that glitters. However, she argues it well and delivers it with so much charm that you can easily go along with it. The sociable fat Charles Coburn plays one of his typical character roles as the sugar daddy. Six-year-old George Winslow has a fun role as the spoiled rich kid. Jane Russell herself does a good job too, especially when she puts on that blonde wig to impersonate Lorelei.
The musical highlight is Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend. Marilyn sings it with a sweet kitty voice and sensual hip movements, dressed in a pink silk dress and fake jewelry, surrounded by staring men. In an earlier song she is briefly dubbed by an opera voice for a comic effect. Jane Russell's singing voice has been fully dubbed. Glamorous dresses, furs and tiaras were fashionable then.

Great opening track with a radiant Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. After that I had to make some money. The humor seemed a bit bland to me at first, but gradually the enthusiasm increased, which resulted in a high score. Sometimes it has to do with a switch that you have to turn on yourself. The story and characters are developed with a sense of exaggeration and that gives rise to really nice scenes. Funny and typical of these kinds of films is the recurring innuendo with which the Hays code was elegantly circumvented.
The icing on the cake are the show numbers with one genuine classic: “diamonds are my best friend”. This one also contains a sample of innuendo when Marilyn Monroe talks about the different shapes of diamonds, but in the meantime seems to gesture with her hands to the bosom.
