Bikur ha-Tizmoret plot

A small Egyptian police marching band comes to Israel to perform at the opening of an Arab cultural center. Due to circumstances, no one comes to pick them up at the airport. They try to reach their destination under their own power, but eventually end up in an unsightly, almost forgotten village in the south of Israel. Forced to spend the night there, they invade the lives of three locals: Iztzik, who is just going through a marital crisis, Papi, who has his long-awaited first date that evening, and Dina, who keeps the local cafe open but is very lonely.

With such a plot you can quickly think that this is a warm-sweet film about building bridges between hostile population groups. Fortunately, The band's visit isn't. Indeed, it looks more like a film from the Scandinavian tradition. In addition to Kaurismaki, you can also think of Roy Andersson: an accumulation of small, dry scenes full of people who don't exactly know it either. Especially the sultry Ronit Elkabetz gives panache to the whole. The camera work is fine and the music of clear added value, while the band only takes action once. All I want to say is that the conflict between Arabs and Israelis plays no role at all here, no, this is a film about the small dramas in ordinary people's lives.

Tricky movie. A lot goes right in the movie. Beautiful images, very stylized (sometimes too stylized), dialogues are good, acting is good, the film is very slow but not boring (the short running time helps). And yet.... Three storylines are being worked out. The story of the leader of the band with Dina is worth reading. Well developed, the characters have depth. You feel the tension between the two and you understand that both carry a past that slowly becomes clear. The other two storylines should have been left out: superficial and meaningless. You're kind of left with a feeling: why did I watch this and what was the message? Ultimately, for me, the film is about the life we live versus the life we could have and wanted to live (but that theme isn't developed very strongly). And and is about two clashing cultures that encounter each other, which creates an uncomfortable tension that remains throughout the film (but not much is done with it afterwards). It doesn't really develop at all. All in all, I was not bored, but I could have easily missed the film. I cannot score higher than 2.5 stars.

A nice satirical print in which the Egyptian police fanfare is invited to play in an Israeli village. It now appears that they were completely forgotten and they are all alone at the airport. What follows is a dry satirical treatise of a kind of road movie and stopover in the middle of nowhere. Although the band consists of seven people, only 2 come to the fore. In the first place the general who, with his penetrating gaze, seems at once stern and helpless. The plot that unfolds with the barmaid is best worked out and forms the core of the film. The loverboy is discussed to a lesser extent, but is also good to follow.

The film lacks a bit better, but nevertheless a great viewer for this short running time. It is a film that relies on its interactions, contacts and emotions of everyday things and concerns. Don't expect spectacular things in advance. That little bit of humor is also a nice bonus.
