Even Tom Hanks sometimes misses the mark. In this remake of the Swedish En Man Som Heter Ove Tom Hanks proves to be unconvincing as the unruly, messy Otto, who is tired of life six months after the death of his wife and makes futile attempts to to end his life. The arrival of new neighbors Marisol [Mariana Treviño] and Jimmy [Cameron Britton] throws a spanner in the works. It doesn't help that the supporting roles consist almost exclusively of caricatures, although this gets a lot better when Otto thaws out. Then Hanks is clearly also on more familiar territory and may still be able to deliver a lump in the throat. But Hanks can't match Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. The role of young Otto in the flashbacks is played by Tom Hanks' son Truman.

Gripping story of an embittered autistic person with an unresolved trauma. Emotional moments alternated with Otto's blunt attitude that sometimes makes you laugh. The new neighbor Marisol is super social and cheerful and tries, in a somewhat exaggerated way, to contact Otto. The failed suicide attempts, which reminded me of the film Suprise by Jeroen van Koningsbrugge, were sad to see. A cat chooses its own owner and that was clearly visible in cat hater Otto, who regularly chased the stray cat away but eventually, after a cold night, mercifully accepted the animal into his home. Great and moving film by Tom Hanks. 4 points
