Kim Barker (Tina Fey) is a female journalist who leaves for the war zone of Kabul on an assignment. There she ends up in a world where adrenaline and parties are embedded in the culture. Like a fish out of water, Kim will have to face the challenge of building a life between the war zones.

“You embrace the suck and move the fuck forward.”
Great film with a strange but successful combination of war violence, drama and a lot of humor (in that scene with the first Afghan woman with a driver's license, I burst out laughing). A weird mix but it works. This is mainly due to the strong script, the atmospheric images and some great acting performances.
We follow a number of journalists instead of soldiers and that of course gives a different vibe. The life of journalists in war is well portrayed and it all feels real and lived (especially the beautiful locations). Fey is good but is actually overshadowed by Freeman, Robbie, Abbott and Thornton. Only Molina has a somewhat peculiar role. The ending is sentimental but I got it right, and I even thought the conversation with the soldier was a perfect ending. And with a song from The National at the end you can never go wrong.

This one was recently on TV and finally picked it up. I didn't know the movie and really had no expectations. The movie was actually quite good. The story was well told and you empathized with the main character. Also well acted and surprisingly a lot of famous people participated. The film is also fairly light-hearted, especially for a war film, but I also thought it was more accessible. Despite the slightly longer running time, the film never bores. Great movie.

A nice satirical insight into a totally inexperienced reporter who is sent by her employer to report from Afghanistan as a war journalist. Fairly light-hearted approach to the whole, making it all easily digestible and enjoyable.
Prima Tina Fey, I honestly didn't know, but it's doing well here. Her character gets a real baptism of fire and culture shock. She has absolutely no idea what she's getting into and as a rookie she arouses both annoyance and respect at the same time, partly because she learns quickly.
I think the film slows down a bit after an hour, but picks it up towards the end. Always nice to see the very graceful Margot Ronnie at work. In addition to her often excellent acting, she is also visually breathtaking.
Great satire at times, especially the first hour. That report about Afghan women were allowed to drive. Cliche, but very funny.
