Film starts very unfunny (kids who have to provide the humor. brrrrr.), picks up a bit in the middle with Billy Connolly but in my opinion it is absolutely not the successful heartwarming funny film that others here apparently see in it. With a lot of effort 2.5 stars.

'What We Did on Our Holiday' (2014) takes the preparations for Grandpa's birthday or farewell party as a prelude to hilarious entanglements about traffic jams, divorce quarrels, old family tensions and other minor sorrows. Rosamund Pike and David Tennant are fun as the couple who briefly pretends their marriage still exists, fearing that the ailing grandfather (Billy Connely) can't deal with more suffering. Or the children, who have their own doubts and questions about the new situation, want to participate. The child actors in particular stand out well with their sharp dialogue fireworks, with which they question the absurdity of adult life with precocious naivete. For a moment the film seems to rise above itself in the middle segment, when Grandpa takes the little fellow in tow in a highly irresponsible beach outing, but the film does not quite manage to pick itself up again after a nice macabre turn. In the end it does not leave much to guess which lessons have been learned by whom and which message the viewer gets.

mortal sin. The film starts off great and lasts for a very long time. The atmosphere is wonderful and the joke density is very high.
But then Grandpa dies (genius role by Connolly) and with that, unfortunately, the film also soon dies, at least when Grandpa has disappeared on the salty, undulating horizon. Because what comes next is cringingly over the top, with a much too emphatic and thus forced search for feel-good as a genre, with which all the clichés come into play.
How do you skillfully kill a potentially great film?
From a big 8, unfortunately, to a meager 6.
