Messy and rudderless, even though the ingredients were plentiful. Absurdism and the military are always a good combination, as well as the names Clooney, Bridges, Spacey and McGregor in bonkers movies. It is therefore difficult to explain that the story is centered around the latter. As it turns out, after the departure of the founders, he has to keep alive the whole business and spirit of the organization, but then why only an artificial prologue is inserted from him (some fleeting images show shown that his wife has cheated him, and he has always been deprived of any social success and prestige), while the organization itself is extensively discussed via flashbacks, is also not a good fit.

All that could be tolerated, if only the humor was sharp. By no means the case; Clooney making a funny face is absolutely not to be sneezed at in a Coen production, but here it has no character. I'm not even going to list the missteps, because they are so (not intentionally intended as in a Coen production) messy. Only the apotheosis with the massive lsdfusion via the tap water was still a nice find. Furthermore, the director kills the already brief time by having the two Clooney-McGregor crash into a rock with the car, because the former tries to paranormally disperse a cloud to confirm his ego in front of the clumsy latter. Moreover, the background of the American invasion of Iraq should have been omitted entirely, because it only serves as an obligatory setting for an in itself bare-bones film.

“It's the Silence of the Goats!”

Strange movie. Messy and confusing, but also funny at times (Jeff Bridges is great) and quirky. The acting of Clooney, McGregor, Bridges, Spacey and Lang, among others, is strong, and you also see many well-known heads in the supporting roles. They're just not helped by a script that jumps from scratch, and the film is just plain boring at times. It's a satire and sometimes it goes over the top, but the film lacks sharpness and humor. With these actors that is a great achievement.

Ask Angela Lansbury

What a nasty setback when this movie came out, despite the good cast and expectations of a comedy starring Jeff Bridges, among others. That had to be fun, well not so.... nevertheless I tried again with the question whether I had seen it wrong at the time. The answer to that is yes and no.

The story about the PSY OPS and the interaction between Lyn and Bob is nice, and that first phase where Lyn does his best to prove his strength but also just as often lets things go wrong. Personally, I find the sarcastic and mean Larry, Spacey, funnier, as does the silly General Hopgood. Apart from a few moments, the film can never really be called very funny and can therefore best be regarded as a satire that puts the warring man and the army, with all its importance, upside down. Something I didn't pay much attention to the first time.

The cast and music are nice, the LSD moment is nice and as the VPRO also says in a review, it is obvious that the actors had fun with each other, but as a viewer it is of little use to name Jeff Bridges as the biggest disappointment who doesn't get any further than a The Dude-Light. No, the idea will have been many times more successful than the final product.
