Hollywood, 1974. Max Barber (Robert de Niro) is a film producer who owes a lot of money to a mob boss. In a desperate act of collecting all the debts, Barber resorts to insurance fraud. He casts a suicidal movie star for his next film, intending to kill him during filming so that insurance money can be collected. However, the plan is not running as smoothly as expected.

Film producer Max Barber [Robert De Niro] is in deep trouble after his umpteenth flop and must raise a fortune in a short time to pay off his debt to Reggie Fontaine [Morgan Freeman], or else! He discovers that insurance companies pay out large sums if the lead actor in a film production dies on set. That's why he decides to give the suicidal western veteran Duke Montana [Tommy Lee Jones] the leading role and does everything he can to cause a fatal accident, but that turns out to be more difficult than expected. The plot is a flashy variation on The Producers, but the cast is very strong (with Lee Jones as the standout) and the cartoonish humor regularly brings back pleasant memories of Road Runner. Anyone want rhubarb?

I don't know what it is, but Creason reminded me of Ray "Barone" Romano the whole movie. Not just his looks but also his accent. That I was involved with that says enough about the film. What a sad whole... De Niro did his best, but the comedy was especially painful. A shame for such an excellent cast. *2.0

Robert De Niro made himself immortal with countless memorable roles that I won't mention now. You know them. The comedies he made in between were sometimes nice (Analyze This/That, Dirty Grandpa) but more often they were big mistakes. But that they forgive him.
But now that he's really starting to get old, it really irritates me that he spends what little time he has on this kind of nonsense. Admittedly, the film has its moments (especially at the beginning), but after that the joke density drops dramatically and what remains are poorly written children's jokes. The fact that he cannot remember a few 'code words' but has to write them down on a napkin is of course a sad low point.
But what do you want?
We turned off the movie halfway through because our son was sick and couldn't sleep. The next day we copied it. Another two days later my wife said "we have to watch that movie with Robert De Niro too." And I said "okay". It's all so unmemorable that we just forgot how it ended.
