Survive Style 5+ plot

"What is your function in life?"

Ishigaki wants to kill his wife, only to find her alive and well at home after he has buried her. Commercial maker Yoko is also annoyed by her husband, the hypnotist Aoyama, and decides to have him removed. Father Kobayashi visits Aoyama's show with his average family and then thinks he is a bird. Meanwhile, their house is broken into by three befriended thieves. And then there's a British hit man with his interpreter Katagiri who calls everyone out and invariably asks the same question: 'What is your function in life?'

Revised after a long time and that was a good thing, because I started to doubt whether the 4.5 * that I had handed out was right.

Fortunately, that doubt has now been smothered, because it remains a bizarre melting pot of strange characters and events. But what I couldn't remember is that the film was so strong visually. In my previous post I already mentioned Asano's house, one room of which is even more surreal and colorful than the other. But the editing and choice of music is particularly strong and is reminiscent of Guy Ritchie's flashy style. In that regard, Vinnie Jones is also quite in the right place. His entrance in the film on the plane is therefore spectacular with pumping music, where my foot also starts to tap. But the Come Baby song and zooming in on the Ugly Guy's face after another homoerotic allusion also works very well.

But the greatest strength remains in the whole series of bizarre characters that pass by. The wife of Asana (how incredibly beautiful Reika Hashimoto is, what a shame she has played so few movies), the Ugly Guy, the sarariman who thinks he is a bird, Vinnie Jones as a hit man and above all his translator who translates everything in the same tone . I had a lot of fun with it.

I can almost hope that after so many years I will start doubting again, because then I think another nice review awaits me. The 4.5 * therefore remain rock solid.

Outside of the visual, I didn't like this at all.

It all looks very colorful, but otherwise the film does not invite you to enjoy it. Several times the same jokes throughout the film, which by the way don't even turn out to be really funny. And that's a shame, because the film largely relies on that. Anyway, it couldn't hold my attention. The acting was strong again. The only acquaintance to me was Asano, but he seems to be able to play all roles.

2*

An outlandish, but very strong film in terms of design. Unfortunately, the jokes are exhausted to the core, causing the film to gradually lose steam in the second half. The segment about the three burglars is by far the least part of the film, the one about the man who buries his wife countless times the most fun.
Director Gen Sekiguchi is a stranger to me. He manages to elicit wonderful performances from Reika Hashimoto and Kyōko Koizumi.
