Film about daily idleness, boredom, indifference and about people who don't really touch each other.

Beautiful and bizarre in its simplicity and despite there is nothing to experience, not a film that makes you yearn for the end.

Yesterday I thought it was time for another independent film. It was Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by American director Jim Jarmusch. His debut film, if you don't count his early, obscure attempts.

The story is about the Hungarian immigrant Willie, who lives in an apartment in New York. One day he is visited by his niece, and she decides to stay for a while. Then one Eddie shows up, a good friend of Willie. After a while, they travel to Cleveland to visit an aunt and hang out there for a while. Finally, the three of them go to Florida to drink, gamble and enjoy the beautiful weather for a while.

Not much else actually happens, and I can't say that there is a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, it is all filmed so beautifully slow and atmospheric, and the characters really take you along during their everyday experiences. The film is shot in atmospheric black and white, often filmed from a simple location and every time a scene ends, the image turns black. That takes some getting used to in a time when we are used to seeing fast moving images with lots of color and a flashy montage.

The film makes extensive use of the song 'I Put a Spell on You' by Screamin' Jay Hawkins; it can be heard on a total of four or five moments in the film. The song fits perfectly into the film and is very conducive to the atmosphere.

This was the first Jarmusch film I saw, so I really liked it. I am very curious about the rest of his work. Four stars for now, with a chance of an additional half increase after possible revision. 4*

Jarmusch's films remain enjoyable to watch. Of course very simple in design in all areas, but that's where Stranger than Paradise really gets its charm. Looks like a school project with the scenes interrupted by a few seconds of black screen.

Jarmusch shows the melting pot that is America; no shortage of roaming bohemians in his films. A Hungarian, Willie, who denies his roots and considers himself thoroughly American, is visited by his niece Eva, who comes over from Budapest. She then plans to move on to Cleveland with an old aunt. Willie and his friend Eddie go on the road a little later to visit her, and the living room atmosphere of the beginning becomes a road movie. The film has some funny moments (eg the cinema scene). Nice? Yes, of course!
