In the height of yuppie greed in 1980s New York, Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) takes an entry-level job at a Wall Street brokerage firm. Tired of not being his own boss, Belfort creates his own company aided by right-hand many Donny (Jonah Hill) and the pair begin to enjoy all that is provided by huge financial success, including the attentions of Naomi (Margot Robbie). However, the legality and morality of the firm is called into question by the FBI.

It is all appearances and superficiality that characterize this arena. We don't really get to know anyone, let alone their deeper motives. You don't feel involved with anyone. It's like you've ended up at a party where you don't know anyone and after a night of yelling and fuss, you're happy to go home.

The Wolf of Wall Street is mainly dominated by an overwhelming visual splendor, combined by non-stop parties, sex and drugs. It might be one of Scorsese's emptiest films in terms of content, but my god, he manages to drag you along for the full 180 minutes, without a single moment of boredom. It's just a very entertaining film, which doesn't really dive deep into character development or anything like that, but just races through the exciting life of Jordan Belfort at a non-stop speed. Leonardo DiCaprio certainly puts down one of his most iconic acting performances to date. He has to portray an incredibly morally corrupt character, and does it in such a way that you also start to empathize with him on a certain level. Without losing sight of the fact that he is a terrible person. So you're dealing here with brilliant writing and acting in that area. But the other actors, including Jonah Hill and the beautiful Margot Robbie, also act very strongly. Especially Hill, who for some reason I mainly consider as a standard comedic actor, is really great.
Scorsese's directing style is just very strong, and besides the strong acting, the film completely carries the film. All those colorful and stylish shots make the cinematography a feast for the eyes, camera work is pure class, but sound and music are also very good. It's also really easy to see why this is one of his most popular movies; it is, despite the long running time, a very accessible film that never becomes really challenging or difficult in terms of themes or message etc. It is definitely a very nice film, with a great rewatch value too, but it comes a long way in my opinion not rightly in his list of the best films. Which of course also says a lot about the man's catalogue.

"I Made $49 Million, Which Really P***** Me Off Because It Was Three Shy Of A Million A Week."
It is quite an impressive film. I put it off for a long time, because I thought a 3 hour movie about a screwed up shareholder is still a long time. Oddly enough, that worked out well.
The film actually rattles along in a smooth line from beginning to end. As a result, a 180-minute film is not that bad. It is in fact a quite impressive story and is more about his private life and how he actually loses himself completely in all the success, than about his stocks.
What is also involved is an impressive cast. DiCaprio and Jonah Hill were truly amazing. So too, despite being quite short. Matthew McConaughey as Mark Hanna. But actually everyone was just impressive.
In the end, perhaps not very surprising that this film did not receive a single nomination. Where the film misses the mark a bit, is the glorification of Jordan Belfort. Jordan Belfort was/is just the type of person who (literally) is about corpses for success. Yet Scorsese puts him down in such a way that his actions somehow seem righteous. This may be partly due to the fact that Belfort was fairly closely involved in the project. He even gets a (totally misplaced) cameo at the end.
