Bland biopic.

The set-up itself is still interesting, if only because it didn't become a best-of collection from Jobs's life. Boyle tries to create the figure by highlighting three moments, but only half succeeds.

Fassbinder does a pretty good job on its own, yet Jobs rarely feels like a realistic character. Maybe it's because the myth surrounding him is too big, or because his behavior is a bit too rude. In any case, I found it difficult to see a person of flesh and blood in him.

Boyle adds too little as a director. Visually it's pretty boring, also in terms of soundtrack it's not much. And that for a director who is known for his stylized approach. That is perhaps the film's biggest shortcoming.

As a biopic, not believable enough to convince Job's fans that it was just a revenge, but also not convincing enough to give Job's haters extra ammunition. Was expecting more coming from Doyle.

2.0*

Too bad how Boyle pulls the contradiction between Fassbender's ego-character arc and the family drama that surrounds it to its artificial extremes. The last ten minutes are cringe-inducing. The cast is excellent out there, and the film also scores on lighting, set design and the appropriate '80s grain.

Steve Jobs can be seen as a foreshadowing of The Social Network (Jobs for Facebook), or as an aftermath (2015 after 2010). In both cases, Sorkin is behind the script, but Fincher's film was more layered and less forced.

After the umpteenth reference to a greatness from the Western canon, I believed it all. Heading in metaphors isn't my biggest hobby.

We already knew that Steve Jobs is a shitty guy. Now you're looking at a guy's jellyfish for 2 hours and it's even worse than I thought. The high or low point was surely the presentation of some computer where he shouted: This is, together with the end of WWII, the most important event of the 20th century. Vomit tray at hand! I'm sure this is a fun movie for nerds. It's also quite often about computers that should not be compatible, or whether they should and whether the team of Apple II should be thanked, or not and about a daughter who is his, or not... boo!

Anyway, after 2 hours I thought: what the hell have I been looking at? And I could just analog again with a book on the couch.
