Lawrence of Arabia plot

"Nothing is written."

In 1935, Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) was killed on his motorcycle. At his memorial service, every guest has different opinions about him; one finds him low to the ground, the other praises him to the heavens. On this, the film story flashes back in time to 1916; England and France fight against Germany in World War I. Turkey, which dominated the Middle East for centuries, is joining the German side. It appears vital to British strategy to unite the Arab tribes under Turkish rule into one Arab army in order to defeat the Turkish Empire. Young Lieutenant Lawrence is sent to Arabia and decides to lead the Arab uprising on his own initiative.

Unlike the movie, I can be short. This just wasn't for me.

He takes way too long. I was looking forward to seeing this one after I ordered it. But after half an hour my attention was already gone. And so it became a long sitting.

Might be a classic, but not for me.

Boring.

“You answered without saying anything. That's politics.”

Impressive epic. Lawrence of Arabia is almost four hours long and I watched it twice. But the film never gets boring and the beautiful images of the desert alone will keep you fascinated. The story about the English and French interests in the Arab countries, the different Arab tribes that work together and later disintegrate and the push back of the Ottoman Empire has consequences to this day. It is therefore also an important history lesson.

David Lean's directing is unparalleled. Not only the images and the beautiful locations impress, but Lean knows how to carry the viewer completely into the impressive story of TE Lawrence with a slow but pleasant rhythm. A weird guy who doesn't give you much height. Perfectly played by Peter O'Toole, who credibly portrays Lawrence's transformation from timid bridge builder to war hero willy-nilly. Also other actors such as Sharif, Quinn and Guinness are excellent. The film is long, but this classic is more than worth it.

Good.

Epic. I think that is the most apt description of Lawrence of Arabia. Director David Lean knows what he's doing at all times and the great thing is that the epic content doesn't get in the way of the narrative. It is to Lean's credit that he was able to make a balanced film. With a playing time of 3h30, that is not obvious.

But Lean is doing just fine. He brings visual delights as Lawrence conducts his desert survival quests, ending with the cavalry charge. By the way, I think it's great portrayed with that wide shot. That is also the strongest part for me. TE Lawrence gets enough attention as the main character and his character development is also fairly well thought out. Peter O'Toole isn't the world's greatest actor, but I think he's okay most of the time. The goofy vibe he gives Lawrence is going to excite him. With Anthony Quinn and Omar Sharif in the supporting roles, he is well surrounded. In any case, that is necessary to carry such a film.

The longer the movie goes on, the more Lawrence becomes an antihero. His turnaround is not always accurately acted by O'Toole. It doesn't make the film any worse, because Lean keeps the balance, with some more political games in small rooms (well, small...). Every now and then some supporting actors fall through the basket, with that typical old-fashioned yelling and yelling. Not everything has stood the test of time. Such bumbling intermezzos do the film no good.

I'm glad I finally saw it, but also glad I didn't do it 10 years ago. A long sitting and far from the best film I've ever seen, but all in all one that is worthy of being labeled a "classic" and "epic".

3.5
