Jamaica Inn plot

England, circa 1800. Mary has lost both her parents and wants to live with her aunt and uncle who run an inn (Jamaica Inn) in a village on the rocky coast of Cornwall. A striking number of ships are shipwrecked on this coast. They are then looted by a gang. That the Jamaica Inn is at the center of this criminal activity is soon apparent to Mary when she rescues Jem from the murderous hands of the gang. But who is the big man behind the gang?

Chadwick!

Although the book is well known, I thought Jamaica Inn (1939) was a little Hitchcock. The noble Sir Humphrey Pengallan is an amusing character who reminded me of Boris Johnson by his manner of speaking and figure. Outstanding role by Charles Laughton. The other cast members gave little color to the film.

Neither Alfred Hitchcock nor Daphne Du Maurier were pleased with this very loose approach to Du Maurier's book of the same name. In the book, the villain shines in absence for a long time and his final appearance is all the more menacing. Here that role has been expanded considerably and although there is something to be done for it from a commercial point of view, it detracts a lot from the mystery. Hitchcock compensates for this with a good splash of action, although the story is sometimes a bit difficult to follow. Some film historians argue that the character of Chadwick reflected how Hitchcock must have felt while making this film. That's an amusing thought, even if this movie is a disappointment.

And on to Hitchcock, this time Jamaica Inn and quite an old one in that sense. I also hoped that this one would be a little better than last week's Sabotage, something that partially came true but also didn't.

The beginning feels nice, a certain nostalgia radiates from the whole, shadowy images of rocks, waves and miniature ships, yes this is beautifully and cleverly made for 1939 and has a good luck factor in that sense. The grim affair in the beginning with the rough heads of the Cornsman do the rest. And it must be said that the concept with the young Mary who accidentally ends up in the den of thieves and becomes involved in the case is quite interesting, but unfortunately the line is not continued enough after the almost lynching.

Because unfortunately, even with the limited running time of 90 minutes, the film regularly manages to die in endless drivel, especially in the situations between Mary and Jem. I find the question who the big man is asked in the synopsis here on MovieMeter just as predictable. From the first moment I suspect the man, moreover, it quickly emerges in the film who is in control, so no surprise there. Nicely acted, especially by Leslie Banks.

Compared to Sabotage, Jamaica Inn is more exciting in terms of plot and story, but in the end the films do not differ much from each other and should also be seen in the era of the 1939s. Anyway, another one crossed off, but it is clear that Hitchcock has better.
