"If these two can learn to stand each other... the bad guys don't stand a chance."

Riggs (Gibson) and Murtaugh (Glover) thoroughly hate each other in Lethal Weapon. But they are colleagues and top bosses in their profession! Gibson is a tough, white killing machine... Glover a staid family man, who constantly feels 'too old'. But by now the duo is fighting their way through Los Angeles, where a modern jungle war is raging. Gibson takes insane risks as a hard-core 'cop'; Glover is a dedicated detective with an impeccable track record.

Dirty Harry and Hill Street Blues mixed and mixed, and set about twenty years in the future.

Lots of humor and lots of speed, that's what it's all about - and now and then something serious in between, and often combined with a brutal action scene. Where the heroes Riggs and Murtaugh are of course larger than life - no bad guy can match that.

Gibson is very good in his role as the suicidal Riggs, and is perfectly complemented by Danny Glover - who is remarkably more out of place in this series than in many other films. There are also plenty of bad guys, with Gary Busey as the figurehead of course.

Still, the film is a bit tame here and there, and that is only noticeable when you compare it with the later parts. And that's exactly what I'm going to do - watch the whole series one after the other.

This is really nostalgia, a time when such action films were not yet self-censored to become PG13 and want to reach the widest possible audience. Lethal Weapon is first and foremost a hard action film with blood and nudity. With the necessary humor, but at the right times. So that the one-liners are fun in between, and not that the action scenes are ridiculed. I miss that in a lot of current action movies.

Gibson and Glover are set on each other. Two different figures, but when it comes down to it they are colleagues against the outside world. And they're also just good cops, which you can't say about all buddycop cops in similar films.

The film remains as solid as a house and is still so much fun. If you see this, you will notice where many later action films miss the mark.
