Diamonds Are Forever plot

"The man who made 007 a household number."

James Bond tracks down an extensive diamond smuggling operation in Amsterdam. There he also meets the seductive Tiffany Case, who turns out to be as beautiful as he is dangerous. The trail then leads to Las Vegas, where Bond has to endure some very inventive assassination attempts. Slowly but surely, Bond learns that his nemesis Ernst Blofeld has a hand in both the diamond smuggling and assassination attempts.

One of the most campy Bond films, especially with that pair of baddies walking hand-in-hand. Look, I think that ever since From Russia With Love (the second and strongest Bond film) 007 has been repeating. Doesn't mean there's something to enjoy every now and then. Two exciting scenes even: into the cremation oven and up the elevator to get to Blofeld's HQ (played by the actor who played Henderson in You Only Live Twice). Connery acts like he doesn't give a damn. It does well, because too much seriousness is not really appropriate in Bond films, as Timothy Dalton would later also notice. Incidentally, I believe that without exception the Daniel Craig Bond films are the worst in the entire series.

After the strong On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Sean Connery returned once more as 007. I don't think that's a very strong move, because Diamonds are Forever really continues the story of OHMSS. I would rather have seen George Lazenby in DAF. Charles Gray is also a blunder. He never convinces me. The high point of the film is early on. The title song by Shirley Bassey. And the fact that when Bond arrives in Amsterdam, German is being spoken. Of course unrealistic. And then the bond girl. In my opinion the worst Bond girl of the entire series. All she does is scream. Overall, the film disappoints. Worst Bond movie after Die Another Day.

We don't finish the James Bond series chronologically and wanted to finish everything with Connery first. Hence not first Lazenby or Moore but first Diamonds are forever, a film that remains far from top but very entertaining.

Bond is off to a flying start with his quest and revenge on Blofeld. Something that then fades into the background with a sinister hitman couple and diamond smuggling. Something that takes place at lightning speed and in many locations, many characters, a bevy of fine and beautiful women and a decent apotheosis.

However, it's not all that great. The whole plot with the diamonds and satellite is not really special. It's not entirely clear to me what exactly Blofeld is planning. Certain developments go very quickly, such as when Bond jumps off the platform to sit on the cruise ship with the next scene. Bond also looks quite old, especially when he frees White and walks in a brown turtleneck with a checkered jacket.

However, the fun should not spoil it. Diamonds are forever is very entertaining and with some very beautiful women. Jill St.John may not beat Auger or Bianchi, but she is a beautiful woman. Just like the wealthy Lana Wood. Add to that a wonderful soundtrack, great title song and entertaining Bruce Glover as Mr. Win, and you have a lot. Diamonds are forever can therefore not be called very good, but very entertaining.
