Go ahead and make up a story that connects to an age-old fairy tale. The makers of the entertaining "Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)" try with a combination of a prequel and sequel, which unfortunately is disappointing .

The story once again centers on hunter and professional butt kicker Eric (Chris Hemsworth), aka "The Huntsman", who loses his love Sara (Jessica Chastain) at the hands of his employer, ice queen Freya (Emily Blunt). Years later, after the events of "Snow White and the Huntsman", she turns out to be still alive and that's a good thing, because Eric needs her help on a mission to find the famous but now missing magic mirror. . Freya's sister, Ravenna (Charlize Theron), appears to be involved.

The splendor of this dazzling (including the costumes) designed fairytale is negated by the messy script, where the story turns out to be a forced and not very imaginative excuse to get Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron against each other. The action scenes are uniformly mediocre and the choreography is far from impressive. The busy, fast camera and editing seem to serve to disguise this. The strong cast with certainly not the least actresses such as Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, cannot save this expensive action spectacle.

All in all, "The Huntsman: Winter's War" has become a moderately redundant sequel.

setback. The movie starts very strong. But after Eric mistakenly believes Sara is dead, the movie falters. At times I find the film quite boring and the story poorly developed. The acting of the cast doesn't always help either. There was absolutely no chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain. The dwarves who (I think) should provide some humor were painfully not funny.

Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron steal the show. The movie scribbles quite a bit at the end with Ravenna's return. It's a shame Theron didn't have a bigger role in the film. The special effects are generally okay. James Newton Howard's music is good, but he can do better.

The strong start and satisfying ending save the film a bit, but it's not enough for a pass.

2.0*
