Hoodwinked! plot

"The Secrets of Fairytales Revealed!"

Everyone knows the story about Little Red Riding Hood, but few know whether the story is completely true. For this we look at what happened after the end of the Little Red Riding Hood story: police from the animal world investigate what happened in Grandma's house. They soon discover several criminal acts involving a girl and a wolf: burglary, disturbance of the peace, using an ax without a license, etc. Gradually, the agents discover more and more snags in the case that need to be solved.

Little Red Riding Hood in a (cheap) modern jacket.

The computer animation makes the film look like a computer game. Fortunately, the ugly animation gradually gets used to, but it clearly shows how much Disney needed Pixar. We can see how it should be done in Toy Story, which is 10 years older than this film.

The fairly original story and soundtrack, both far from perfect, are the best the film has to offer, but fail to save the film in my opinion.

2.5 skinny stars from me.

Hoodwinked is quickly obsolete, it seems. I didn't see it in 2005 and reviews from then indicated that the animation was lagging behind the big studios, but now it really doesn't look like it anymore and the whole thing of a fairytale parody feels a bit trite. On the other hand, there were also two Shreks by the time this one came out.

It's just really second-rate material and not just because of the budget, although it doesn't help the action scenes that the animation looks very stiff. The humor is often just not good enough, although it was still nice how the switching of perspective still explains some cartoonish inexplicables (for example the wolf who in Red Riding Hood's story cannot possibly catch up with her, after which it appears in his story that he has used a taxi those kinds of things). Most of it doesn't feel fresh anymore, though, and it doesn't help that I already exposed the villain from the moment Red Riding Hood fell from the cable car.

It is all watchable, but also something that will soon be forgotten I suspect. Nice voice acting by Patrick Warburton as the Wolf, that may be said again.
2*

An entertaining film and nothing more. The bad animation didn't bother me, although at one point it seemed more like I was watching a computer game than a movie. However, the story was nicely put together and with a good nod to movies like ''The Usual Suspects'' you can do a lot. It didn't take too long. The director has made a good choice to keep the film relatively short and to immediately tie a climax to it after the unmasking of the villain. This drowns out the rather lagging animation, because if I compare this with Shrek that came out 4 years earlier, this is about a comparable result of a film that I also cobbled together with my 1st year graphic design experience (admittedly, Shrek will a budget of just over 15 million euros).

What really struck me was the nice voice acting. You could have left Hathaway at home for the part of Red, but how the Wolf's voice actor (I hear from The One Ring that it turns out to be Warburton, what a wonderful voice that man has? ) knows how to place himself in his character in this way is fantastic. Nice and cool, relaxed and his dry comments make it complete.

Nice movie, but it's not spectacular and that's how it's meant to be.
