I was a bit disappointed after Memorizu. I expected a little more story and character development. The images were spectacular, the images at the end credits were almost the best thing about the film, because it was more modest and less "in your face". 3*

A rather spectacular animation that starts when Rei receives an invention, after which an exciting journey follows. Lots of speed, strong action moments, explosions, destruction and a dose of tension follow. The technology used in this is also entertaining and some vehicles are nicely put together. So I found that train or whatever it was exactly during that first chase very entertaining. Despite a relatively long running time, the film does not collapse and the level remains high.

steampunk

An anime set during the industrial revolution in England where new technology is used to and fro. It is striking that the film does not really have bad guys and good guys. The culprit is technology and science that humans have not yet grasped, leading to catastrophic consequences. Good idea to also put Robert Stephenson in the film (even though he was already deceased). The idea is strong, but the film itself was a bit disappointing because of the many weakly developed characters, the geeky stuff with those machines and a heavily collapsing middle section. It falls quite short to be a masterpiece.
