Been on the shelf for years, finally seen. It's been quite some time since I was able to see this 'Papurika', but I still think it's worth mentioning, because I quite enjoyed this print. Wonderful balance between dream and reality. Fantastically animated worlds and entertaining from start to finish. A trip where I was sucked in. Add to that the bombastic music and I am more than satisfied with the result that director Satoshi Kon has delivered. Thick enough.

Paprika I found a setback. You can clearly see to what extent the film influenced Inception, but beyond the intrusion of other people's dreams there is no similarity. Once again there were no subtitles, so I was at the mercy of the English dub, what irritating Paprika talks, looks like a toddler. In addition, the dialogues are not to follow because they are very fast and monotonous. The dreams were also a bit chaotic and at times really random as characters say the strangest things and march around with what looks like a Nazi salute.

The character animation wasn't bad, but the film was also full of hideous digital animations and effects (a nasty habit of 2000s animated films). I liked Kon's earlier films much better.

In the end, I even thought this movie was a long one. Where Nolan tells a complicated but understandable story in Inception, it's too chaotic for me here.

Surprisingly.

Finally an anime that can convince me. Kon is still unknown to me, but Paprika shows me that there is still anime that I can appreciate. It's hard to convince me with anime, but I could enjoy Paprika again.

The story is relatively difficult, fast and chaotic. You really have to pay attention to keep up with it all, because the details fly around your ears. Here and there too many attempts are made to make it extra confusing, because those attempts do not have much added value. However, the story itself continues to be well put together at all times.

Voice acting finally didn't bother me. No irritating high-pitched voices or annoying characters, but somewhat calmer and nicer characters. Especially Paprika itself was a nice appearance, well drawn too. In terms of animation itself, I thought it looked great too. Beautiful, grand images in between that are sure to stand out.

As the end approaches, the film takes on a bombastic form, but that doesn't matter, because this film always remains charming. That own sauce also makes Paprika a nicer result. It is a pity that in between there are sometimes unnecessary perverse scenes that never benefit the film itself.

Yes, I did have fun. It sometimes took me some effort to keep up with it, Kon aims a bit too hard, but this was a pleasant surprise that I was able to enjoy quite a bit. Nice that I could come across an animation film that I could really enjoy again.
