Beautifully depicted, but a hell of a film. At first I had no idea what you were looking at. The comparison with the beautifully made 1883 is hard to find. The whole remains incoherent. There is a form of humor in the film of "Disney" level with an age limit of 4 years, while in another scene 50 people are easily slaughtered. The film music, which is supposed to be compelling and give the story a 60s feel, also doesn't resonate well with me. Three hours of my life... I can tell you for an hour how much I hated this movie. no 2nd part for me.

Long-winded, beautifully laid out, but it is so annoyingly structured without a clear beginning, middle and end. Truly a first act of a larger story, without an individual spirit. Not like, for example, Dune Part 1 managed to stand on its own. It is beautiful and aims to provide a lot of detail and character development. But it's not subtle, has no pace and no clear goal it wants to work towards. And then there's that ending, which I expect to be a big trailer for the sequels. It will therefore depend on whether they will enrich this film or whether it will drag it down more. Just a passing grade, but with many negatives.

The first part of Costner's ambitious attempt to construct the 15 years of US history looks beautiful, has sublime camera work. Michael Muro and a stirring score written by John Debney. But the screenplay is a mess. An abundance of characters about whom we hardly learn anything, alternating storylines that are often difficult to distinguish from each other and a lack of dramatic structure. Every time you return to a storyline you feel like you've missed something. Costner explicitly refers to genre classics such as Once Upon A Time In The West and How The West Was Won, but would have done better to focus less on the form and more on the content. Ends with a taste of the second half of this western epic. I feel morally obliged to watch it, but don't feel called to follow in my footsteps.
