The Far Country plot

"RENEE...the innocent...and the untamed...BEN...the gambler...and the loser...GANNON...the law...and the noose...RUBE...the friendless...and the afraid."

The year is 1896. Adventurer Jeff Webster sees the development of the gold rush at Klondike and thinks he can make a lot of money driving cattle from Wyoming to this area. Along the way, he gets into trouble with the corrupt Sheriff Gannon in Skagway and loses all his livestock. Then, along with his elderly business partner Ben Tatum, Jeff becomes involved in the gold rush himself. Both Renee Vallon, granddaughter of Marshal Rube Morris, and saloon owner Ronda Castle fall in love with the stoic Jeff.

A fine western, like Anthony Mann and James Stewart made more. The Far Country also makes good use of the beautiful nature. This time it is set in the mountains of Northern Canada. The gold rush plays an important role in this, as does the inflation that it brings with it. More important, however, is a herd of cattle that, by changing owners (several times), causes some discord.

Jeff Webster (Stewart) is not the only one who suffers from this disagreement. His friends Ben Tatum and Rube Morris also have to endure a lot. Both roles are played well. It was especially nice to see Walter Brennan work with James Stewart. Two other nice roles were for the two women in love, of which I clearly thought Ruth Roman was the better.

The film ends beautifully. Jeff has already escaped death a few times and the problems he has brought with him to Dawson are getting bigger and bigger. He decides to make one last attempt to put an end to all the trouble. Where he has not accepted help from others throughout the film, because he thought he could take care of himself, the villagers finally manage to save him from death just in time. In doing so, they partly prove him wrong and also express their gratitude.

It feels a little strange not to see James Stewart as noble and/or innocent, but don't worry...
Classic fifties western with the classic ingredients: the gunfights, the "settling scores" at the bar, the shaky justice system, the abuse of power, the one-against-all situations, the inevitable romance... Too bad the avalanche accident wasn't worked out better and more concretely.
Not great, but more than enough to keep fans of the genre captivated for an hour and a half.
And James Stewart? Well, he was always good.

The combination of James Stewart and Anthony Mann clearly works. The 4th western together and even though this is not the best of the series of collaborations, it is a solid film. A western according to the old Hollywood book, but it is something different than a John Wayne film. Stewart is no Wayne, but he does have enough charisma, also as a cowboy, to pull such a film. The whole thing is not so special, but it is craftsmanship. And lovers of the genre will enjoy this.
