The Salvation plot
"Bad men will bleed."
America, 1870. When peaceful Danish settler Jon kills his family's killer, he unleashes the wrath of his brother, the infamous gang leader Delarue. Betrayed by his corrupt and cowardly community, Jon turns into a vengeful hunter and hunts down the outlaws.

A western in 2014. And then another Danish one. A genre that died a quiet death in the 1970s. With every so often an attempt to breathe life back into the atmosphere of yesteryear. With The Salvation, that's what happened. It's safe on paper. The film takes a well-known recipe with a revenge story, an American village at the end of the 19th century and the necessary shots and atmospheric music. And yet Kristian Levring gives the film a contemporary twist, making the film both new and nostalgic. Unique yet familiar. No corny stuff, no silly humor, but a good western. As if time has stood still and has continued on with some new film techniques.
The Salvation isn't the best western. Before that, the masters of the 50s and 60s will probably continue to dominate the genre forever. But The Salvation shows that western is far from dead either. The film can - albeit modestly - safely place itself with the old masters.

Pretty fun revenge western with a Danish twist. The film is indeed slow to start, but offers enough information not to come across as too stereotypical. Attention is paid to the situation of the Danish family and the real estate scandal is an additional factor that contributes to the film.
Furthermore, cinematographically very good. Good atmosphere creation, excellent decors and technically well-maintained. Not so much dialogue, rather taciturn characters, especially Jon (Mads Mikkelsen himself).
