Stylish and outdated. Not a bad film, and Wayne easily manages with his charisma (and mustache this time), but as a whole it is disappointing. The acting is a bit stiff and it all looks way too clean to be truly believable. This is Hollywood in the West, not the West itself. The story itself is yet another variation on all those Ford films, although the ending is somewhat different. Some pictures are still very beautiful. 2.5*.

A somewhat forced western with John Wayne playing one of his many standard roles. This time as an army officer just before his retirement. Apparently, 'one more mission before I retire' has been around for a long time in the film world. There is also a love story added and the necessary action and adventure. Fans will enjoy this. All elements are present. But the film is not really special.

Well.

John Wayne with a stick-on mustache goes on a mission with his boy scouts. That's pretty much it. It certainly doesn't make for a good film, but I'm also not a fan of those bombastic classic westerns and certainly not that wooden amateur theater by Wayne and co. If I made a top 10 list of worst Hollywood actors, Wayne would probably not score too badly. Visually the film is surprising. I would never have guessed at the release year as 1949 - more like a dozen years later. The action scenes themselves are not so dated that they become childish. That is also an achievement.
