Die Fälscher plot

Berlin 1936. Sorowitsch is the king of counterfeiters. In his world of thugs, gigolos and ruffians, life is just a game... and he just prints the money he needs for that. One day he is betrayed. He is arrested by Commissioner Herzog and deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp. It comes down to saving his own skin at any cost. Sorowitsch fears the worst when he is transferred to Sachsenhausen in 1944. But life offers him one last chance. Upon arrival, he is met by none other than Commissioner Herzog, who is leading a secret mission. Sorowitsch and a group of carefully selected professionals have to counterfeit a lot of foreign money. The aim of this operation is to undermine the Allies' economy. This presents them with an unbearable moral dilemma. Suddenly it is no longer about survival but about conscience.

Reasonable war/drama film. And while the film definitely has good things and really nice moments, it never really appeals to me. What I really like about the film is the double of their assignment and the privileges they are offered for it. Not only do they live reasonably well compared to their peers, but the difference between survival and perishing is sometimes only a fraction of meters away. Only a fence separates them from the rest of the camp. That so-called life is constantly quite dreamy and portrayed with ditto harmonica music as if it all happened on a carefree Sunday afternoon. I personally miss a bit of impact, the absolute threat of death or measures. It seems to me that they are too important and that they bark but rarely bite and that you as a viewer also know that they are not going to happen that much.

I find it a bit too bland at times. Anyway, the actors are doing their best. Markovics more than adequately portrays the convincing, spawning, smart ladysman and counterfeiter.

That was actually it. Good movie no more.

Apparently I've seen that Fälscher before. A number of scenes looked familiar to me, such as that humiliating pee scene or the cop who went to exchange the counterfeit pounds in Switzerland.

Interesting film about a fascinating, perhaps less well-known theme. This Holocaust film focuses less on the horrors, but mainly puts forward a moral theme. It is also not clear to the viewer what to think of this command. On the one hand you think about the will to survive and to keep a low profile, to persevere and to enjoy the privileges that are theirs and others are not. On the other hand, you support the Nazi apparatus that wants your own destruction or has already committed acts against your own family or friends. There is no envy of other prisoners because they are separated, but in the end it is clear that the other prisoners were suspicious. It's a shame this wasn't worked out better.

Better Holocaust films have been made before, but this Die Fälscher is quite a good addition. Karl Markovics does an excellent job and takes the film to the next level. With his penetrating gaze you can always see him thinking. It is also questionable, as he was also asked in the film what his real intention was to "work" for the Nazis: to survive or to prove to himself that he can fabricate a perfect counterfeit dollar bill...
