Captain Carter (Stephen Boyd) is assigned to take a bridge behind German lines from the advancing Allies. He has to ask help from the B(lack) company for this.

Lieutenant Wallace (Robert Hooks) is not eager to help him, but still manages to gather some of his men to go with him and Carter.

During the mission, Carter soon finds out that these men had no regular training and that they were only supposed to clean the latrines. Yet he is amazed by the versatile and surprising possibilities these men have and he has to revise his image of black Americans.

"Carter's Army" is not a blaxsploitation film (film made by Black Americans), but in this film one dares to criticize racial discrimination. It soon becomes clear that many of the prejudices of the white American are simply not based on anything. Partly because of this topic of discussion, it is mainly a film with a lot of dialogues and actually quite little action. As a result, the danger from the Germans is unfortunately less clear.

What I really appreciated is that in this film the Germans actually speak German. In many of the (American) war films, German was replaced by English with a German accent.

The film is full of familiar faces. For example, we see a young Richard Pryor passing by as one of the soldiers and Susan Oliver passing by as a German who offers the men shelter.

Partly due to the reasonably strong acting and the whole racial discrimination discussion, the film still manages to remain quite fascinating. Other than that, very little happens. It takes quite a long time before the men actually start working on the mission and besides that the action is not really much.

Entertaining for once, but not a movie I'll watch again anytime soon.
