Jisatsu Sâkuru plot

"Well then, goodbye everybody."

Japan, 2001. The popularity of the band Desert ripples through youth circles across the country. One day, 54 high school girls in Tokyo commit suicide by throwing themselves in front of the moving train at Shinjuku station. This seems to trigger a whole series of suicides in Tokyo. The police are investigating the case but are in the dark: is it not a coincidence? Then a young lady calls the police and points them to a website that could be the key to all the incidents. In addition, a mysterious child calls Detective Kuroda personally, saying that another wave of suicides is imminent. Then something happens that no one expected...

Quite disappointed with this movie. The trailer promised something good where you see hair coming out of a copy machine. I thought, nice and creepy and that is always welcome. But that part, which is already 75% of the trailer, is nowhere in this movie. Very misleading. The film itself is indeed a bit like loose sand. Of course it is nice to watch a Japanese film again, the beginning with the suicide of all those girls was already completely shot over the top with cheerful music and the blood and limbs flew everywhere. In terms of gore you still have some finds here, but unfortunately the film never gets even a little bit exciting and there are many things that just ruin the film, first of all that misleading trailer, then also for example that Suicide club with those very irritating comedians who are meanwhile still nicely crazy, but very badly portrayed. And just the lack of logic and that many questions remain unanswered. Sometimes it seemed like I was watching some kind of dance comedy, and what did that whole dessert program have to do with those murders?

Unfortunately, Suicide Club missed the mark for me. It's more of a gore comedy than a horror. What I do have something to say about is the acting. But hey, hopefully Hazard and Hair Extensions (which are on their way) are doable.

A five, so a:

2.5*

Since I recently tipped this film for a challenge, I thought it was time to rewatch the film myself - it's been a year or so since I last saw it. The four stars remain, as far as I'm concerned. There are some great scenes in it, such as of course the infamous mass suicide at the train station but also the skin scraping at the end, and Sono knows like no other how to create a bizarre, alienating atmosphere in a visually beautiful way.

But no matter how well the film does on the above points - the story is confusing and I honestly still have no idea what is actually going on. Now, not everything needs to be pre-digested and explained, but in this film it was very incoherent. Whether there is a consistent explanation, or whether this is left to the viewer, or whether it is all irrelevant, I do not know. Nevertheless, the film is still more than intriguing enough to maintain its score.

After nine years I have subjected it to a revision again. I hoped that I would appreciate it more on a second viewing, and I can, if it weren't for the fact that I lost my way again halfway through. After the song at the bowling alley, actually.

The intro with the suicide in front of the train is still impressive. The music in the background in combination with the schoolgirls who are completely committed to the train makes it extra twisted. The subsequent deaths are also terrifyingly cool, and give the film a rather bloody color.

Sono tells a story that is probably much deeper than you can initially imagine. Even afterwards when I read things about it, there were still question marks. This makes the film feel a bit too pretentious. The conclusion with the J-pop group is a nice find. Not my favorite music, but they are often songs that stick in your mind.
