Fear X plot

"The Past Can Never Be Rewound."

Harry Cain (John Turturro) slowly opens the curtains of his suburban home, somewhere in Utah in the wintry Midwest of America. Harry's wife was recently shot dead in the parking garage of one of those exchangeable shopping malls where he is a security officer. Harry is a broken man, but he needs to know why his wife was murdered. Besides his wife, someone else was killed; the police are puzzled. Harry searches endlessly for the videotapes of the shopping mall security, looking for suspicious persons. When the police finally deliver a vague picture of the suspected perpetrator, Harry realizes that this man may have lived in the house across the street for some time. Since the police do not have enough evidence to take further steps, he continues to investigate himself. The trail leads to cold Montana.

Refn impresses again.

A wonderful film, one that once again really kept me glued to the screen. Indeed it reminds me a lot of Lynch, Turturro's confused head even reminded me a bit of Eraserhead in certain shots. The mysterious atmosphere is also completely fine here. The atmospheric setting (the hotel), some characteristic Refn lighting, and a buzzing sound design are the most important link in this.

Turturro proves to be cut from the right stuff for this kind of role, the rest of the crowd is acting at an adequate level. Funny to see that father from Dexter. As for the whole story behind the film, I don't think it's any higher math. Fairly simple, yet effective. Moreover, not necessarily necessary to be able to enjoy this atmospheric work, since fortunately the film is more than just a puzzle.

Refn has never disappointed me, and this Fear X doesn't change that. Class. 4.0*.

Rather than the documentary style Refn uses in his first two films, Fear X is highly stylistic and ambiguous. There is an uncanny atmosphere that is most closely related to the work of David Lynch. In particular the dark colors, the atmospheric score by Brian Eno, the setting of the story in a mysterious all-American village and the lonely, silent protagonist who undertakes a nightmarish trip; Fear X has a story-technical and visual affinity with Lynch films such as Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986) and Lost Highway (1997). Refn also uses the color red very frequently for the first time in his career. The color represents self-destruction, passion, combativeness, all qualities that the stubborn Harry possesses. Looking back, Fear X has been a very defining film for Refn's further development as a filmmaker. Many of his later visual finds and stylistic cues have their origin in this little-seen 2003 film.

Last Refn film I had yet to see and also his least film. He learned from it!

It all starts promisingly with a security guard at a mall scanning surveillance footage for his wife's killer, who was also murdered in that mall. But unfortunately the puzzle is soon put by the slightly too easy hints.

In terms of style, also a bit searching here, but the refn sauce is already visible here, you can always leave it to him to choose good actors.
