"No one is what they seem."
Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess), a recent medical graduate, soon lands a position at a mental institution. There he meets the beautiful patient Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale), whom he falls in love with instantly. However, he is unaware of a recent horrific change of staff within the institution.

Film does a number of things very well. Setting always works, acting performances at a high level and the atmosphere is nice. What works a bit against is that the mystery is revealed very quickly and the suspense is somewhat disappointing. But all in all a nice movie.

Not too good. The premise and setting are promising, for a bleak thriller. After fifteen minutes, however, it becomes clear that a love plot could start to predominate, and that was anything but where I went to watch the (or a) movie. After half an hour a nice twist is thrown in, although it is poorly developed (why are you suddenly among all those people, why is that not being watched, why is no one noticed).
Then it just goes on and on. The characters have no depth and you don't feel connected to anyone. There is no tension, even if it is tried. Acting won't take you, not even by Kingsley. Clichéd light-thriller scenes, but it is a romance-drama set against a 'deranged' setting, which does not convince in the credibility. Imaging and time image are fine, but I had to sigh a little too much during this print. I didn't necessarily see the 'big twist' at the end coming, but I absolutely couldn't save the film. All a bit too contrived.
