Dans la Maison plot

"There's always a way in"

A French teacher is discouraged by his new students' homework assignments, except for one student's work. This student prefers an inconspicuous place at the back of the classroom, but he has a keen sense of observation and has voyeuristic tendencies. He is encouraged by the teacher to write a series of essays about the world of a classmate's family and that of the teacher. Reality and fiction become intertwined in a subtle game. But what dark intentions does this student hide and how far will he go with his plan?

Dans la maison is actually a postmodern novel in film form: the writer is a character himself and his characters are constructed in front of the viewer. The nice thing is that in this case the writer is accompanied by a literature teacher, who in turn is also a character.

So much for the construction. In terms of content, Claude's voyeurism towards Esther is particularly intriguing. Their relationship is quite complex and the film manages to portray this well (such a sentence about the smell of a middle-class woman will stick for a while). Perhaps you can see them as the opposite of what we saw in Jeune & Jolie between a young girl and an older man.

Towards the end it becomes increasingly difficult to know which aspect of the story is factual; deconstruction and perspective are increasingly emerging in the form, while the content is becoming more and more caricatured (compare Adaptation.) There is, however, no question of a style break and I found Dans la maison therefore over the entire length of a fine level. Making a film about literature, leave that to the French.

Actually quite enjoyed Dans la maison. Not in the least by Fabrice Luchini who gave the best of herself again. Very nice actor who I already got to know through another Ozon film, especially Potiche (2010). He is very expressive, dynamic and convincing in his roles. Again, I think he lifts the film to a higher and more enjoyable level.

Kristin Scott Thomas also did well here. In itself a nice subplot with its erotic art gallery. The interaction with Luchini was also good.

Dans la maison is also intriguing and fascinating to follow. It may all seem to be going light-hearted and it actually is, but there is more going on under the skin. Claude has something innocent about him, but at the same time he is unpredictable, mysterious and voyeuristic. You can never fully unravel his motives and the further you go into the film, the more surprising it becomes. Fiction and reality are cleverly mixed up in a casual way. You can't call this a real thriller, but it does get uncomfortable when you put everything together.

Strong film by Ozon, which only shows its full potential well in the second part. But apart from that, I also found the literary dialogues quite nice to follow.

I liked it too. Not really a movie to compare to. Rear Window, Body Double, Disturbia is slightly different in terms of voyeurism. This film feels much more intimate, probably also because of the literary and poetic that keeps coming back. Claude is difficult to estimate. He seems to be a bit sociopathic and probably is. His teacher seems to go along with this, encouraging him to write somewhere. They both find it exciting and, in a way, exciting. Ozone's films are always unique and always quite intriguing. Seigner and Kristin Scott Thomas are two outstanding French actresses. Somehow it stays cool. I thought the ending was missing something, or maybe a little too easy.
