Beautiful black. The plot seems to show some holes in the first instance, but that is more than made up for by, for example, the atmospheric depiction of (nightly) Paris at that time and scenes such as the one in the elevator with thriller-like elements. In the end most of the pieces of the puzzle fall into place , if at the end it turns out that the detectives have their affairs in order, but a few questions about people's behavior and reactions remain . Good acting, especially by Jeanne Moreau. Also striking throughout the story is the way in which people observe each other, during various contacts between the persons or when passing random passers-by. That also gives it a special atmosphere. After all, Miles David's music fits in well with what is being shown.

Three different speeds are used. The joyride is hectic, young and brash. The scenes in the elevator are static and claustrophobic. In between is the pace of Jeanne Moreau's night watchman through Paris. It all takes place within twenty-four hours. The thunderstorm and artificial lighting enhance the atmosphere of the sultry nightlife, as does Miles Davis' jazz. During the mad ride, the musical rhythm becomes frenetic. The style is realistic. Jeanne Moreau wears no makeup, is not idealized. Modern trinkets are part of the lifestyle: a coveted model from Mercedes, a Chevy convertible and a mini camera from Minox.

The intrigue is American. There is a femme fatale, an antihero and a cool detective (Lino Ventura). Julien is suspected of a double murder that he did not commit, but his alibi means that he was committing another murder elsewhere. There is also a political side to it: the unsympathetic victim is an arms dealer who gets rich from the war, a capitalist.

The two main characters never appear together, except in those developed photos at the end. Still, the montage suggests that they are connected. In the beginning they have a phone conversation. When she rattles the fence, he hears the sound. As a crime story it is well put together, but it is mainly the style and the atmosphere that make this a classic.

Strong film noir where it is thumbs and fingers licking visually. The atmosphere created by Malle is masterful. Not only the beautiful black and white catches the eye, but the editing and camera use are also of a very high level. In addition, a number of strong scenes also stand out. Think, for example, of the nocturnal walk of the eye-catching Florence, where cars flash past in front of and behind her. All this is accompanied by a very sensual and atmospheric soundtrack of jazz.

In addition, in addition to the simple and calmly rippling plot, the tension is striking. The murder, the elevator scene, the car ride ... all contribute to a pleasant and fascinating hour and a half. It also becomes nice when you realize that indeed the two lovebirds are never captured together in one image.

The film tends to a strong 4.5* actually, but I was still a bit hungry in terms of content. The plot and confusion was a little too easy and felt like there were some plot holes and coincidences in the subplots. Nevertheless, very much enjoyed Louise Malle. Need to urgently make some change to those paltry 4 movies I already saw of him.
