Simon and Robyn are a young couple whose life goes as planned until they meet a high school acquaintance and their world spirals downward. At first glance, Simon doesn't recognize the man, but the series of chance encounters lead to a gruesome secret from their past being uncovered. When Robyn learns the disturbing truth, she wonders how well people really know the person closest to them.

Extremely strong.
Those mysterious thrillers are really my thing. Likewise here. They tell you enough to keep it interesting but not enough to easily unravel the whole plot. In the end it all becomes clear in a nice way. The film is exciting from start to finish, never boring, and the characters are played very well.
Great debut from Edgerton. I wonder what else he has to offer.

The nasty atmosphere is well hit and did me personally more (and not in a pleasant way) than the shock moments. Excellent play from the two men, and Rebecca Hall had a nice insecurity and vulnerability. Nice that good and evil are not unequivocally divided. Users here who think that a simple DNA test will solve the problems apparently don't realize the impact of that. "Honey, I just want to give our baby a DNA test to see if it's mine, because you may have been raped while you were drugged." Congratulations to polymath Edgerton.

Simon and Robyn are a successful couple who move back to the area where Simon grew up. There Simon runs into an old friend from school. Gordon becomes increasingly intrusive with his expressions of friendship. After Simon tells them to leave them alone, Robyn no longer feels safe in her own home...
The film has a very pleasant structure. First we get to know the main characters a bit and then a mysterious atmosphere is slowly built up. In the end, the film is even quite exciting, after which it suddenly goes into a completely unexpected corner. It is also really a film that you should know nothing about in advance.
The film is directed, written and produced by Joel Edgerton who also plays Gordon. Both the acting and the camera work are very understated.
What the film ends up being is a lot more interesting than you might initially expect. What happens to bullies and victims after school? Here Gordon at least knows how to turn the tables. Originally the ending was supposed to be that Gordon is not the father of the child, but by suggesting this to Simon has always left him in doubt. Now the film ends even more ambiguous because we don't know whether the child is Gordon or not.
All in all, an unexpectedly strong Mystery film.
