Secret Window plot

"The most important part of a story is the ending."

A writer, Morton Rainey, has retired to his country house on the shores of Tashmore Lake after his wife cheats on him. One day a man named John Shooter arrives and accuses Morton of stealing his story. Morton tries to convince the man that this really isn't the case, and tries to show him the original story, written two years before Shooter's story. However, somehow he can't find the original and strange things start to happen...

Weak.

The plot ultimately revolves around a trick that has been used too many times before, explaining everything too easily - but taking far too long to get there. The author's complacency - and yes, Stephen King sometimes gets away with it with a French twist. Usually that is still good because of a horror element, but that is also completely missing here.

Depp plays just a bit too flat and doesn't impress. The rest of the cast also barely, although Turturro still has a moment. Given the laundry list of names in the credits, that's disappointing. Image and sound are actually on the same level - quite meh, and that seems to be a good summary for the entire oeuvre of director Koepp.

Depp once plays a not too eccentric character and that is sometimes interesting. Depp plays a not too eccentric character once and that is also interesting to see. Also a nice role for Turturro. In terms of plot, the ending is not entirely a surprise. The story in the plot is actually already begging to be mirrored in the plot itself and then it makes sense that Turturro's role is actually an aspect of Depp's character. It reminds me of Fight Club, but also of Shutter Island. It's quite entertaining, but not super original, which puts me at 2.5* .

Watched it again recently and continue to find this really great film, with a wonderful Depp. I also have a soft spot for that schizo-mystery vibe. And despite you already know the outcome after the first viewing, I still watch such films every so often, also with 'The Machinist' and 'Fight Club'. This 'Secret Window' is in any case a lot less compelling, hard nzo than 2 films mentioned.
