The couple Drake and Patty make the purchase of a lifetime, a beautiful Victorian house in San Francisco. To cut costs, they rent the downstairs apartment to a Chinese couple and the studio to Carter Hayes. Hayes seems like a perfect tenant, good references and lots of money in the bank. But as Hayes starts to show strange and antisocial traits, Drake and Patty regret it, and their lives turn into a nightmare.

Weak Schlesinger.
Where the director with, for example, The Marathon Man showed that he is right to earn his spurs in thrillerland, here is a bit wrong. It's not just about the grimace of Modine or the out of place Griffith. This is mainly due to the weak standard script that is made up of mere clichés.

Mediocre film in which a couple buys a large house and looks for a subtenant. A good set up for a thriller. But it's all rather unbelievable and the story, especially during the first half, is rather repetitive. It's not really annoying, but this could have been more.

Small setback. In itself it contains a nice story, but I found the execution less successful as a thriller. Thought it leaned more towards the drama genre with some thriller elements. The last part felt much more like a thriller and for me those were the best moments in this film. Fortunately, the film still contains the necessary mystery on the part of Carter Hayes, who was strongly played by Michael Keaton. The film has its dark moments, but because the film is not exciting for the entire running time, the overall picture is a bit disappointing.
