In the first half hour 'Old' skillfully takes you into the mystery and the atmosphere even reminded me of The Ruins from 2008. Unfortunately, the oppressive horror from that film does not want to strike because once the concept becomes clear, 'Old' falls prey to bad acting and poor direction. The character developments of the characters, in the light of the situation in which they find themselves, are not convincing. Why would 30 year old kids want to make sandcastles when they talk like adults? In that respect, the concept of 'Old' is original, but the elaboration is not well thought out.

When night falls, the film has degenerated into a vague mess of plot-driven events that follow each other in rapid succession but never cause any real drama. The only quality thing about 'Old' is the camera work. When dramatic events take place, no decoupage takes place, but as a spectator you are in the middle of the scene. The camera moves around and you keep catching parts of what's happening. This way of filming works much more realistically and stimulates suggestion. The denouement is a missed opportunity. Wouldn't it have been more dramatic if the two survivors had been very old? All in all 'Old' is a film with a nice idea that deserved a lot more budget.

It only remains for me to mention that this is my last review on Moviemeter. The site has become an advertising column where I have to scroll for miles to find a bit of content. I have the impression that the advertisers have become more important than the ones who write reviews. Doesn't make sense. I won't close my account because maybe others will benefit from my contributions but the fun is over for me. Had a great time here, thanks for that. Hi!

What a mess of a movie. The acting is laughably bad for the first time (so are those accents, my god). The second worst point is the dialogues. Shyamalan really can't write for one meter, you would think he should realize that himself after many films. The writing is really of a caliber reminiscent of a movie like The Room. The directing itself succeeds a little better, there are some reasonable shots in it, but that's about it. Mostly strangely chosen camera angles, and an ugly filter on the whole, well. What's left then? Well, the concept is of course cool and interesting, and against your better judgment you keep hoping that Shyamalan will do something really interesting or cool with it, but apart from a few things and moments that doesn't happen. I understand that the film is based on a well-received graphic novel, so this is really a missed opportunity. The source material can be as good or interesting as it wants to be, but Shyamalan messes it up in the execution.

Old is truly B-movie level, without the quip, the fun or the self-reflection. 1.5*.

Well where do you start?

First of all I thought this film was original and the pace was good, which made the film look nice. But then I come to the acting and that is really a downside of this film. The father and mother of the 2 kids could hardly act well, but that was partly due to the dialogues. Both actors were not American either, so it all sounds a bit more unbelievable.

The story itself was very original and at times exciting and moving. You will only experience that you get 2 years older in half an hour. Still, there were strange moments. Trent making Kara pregnant under the guise of playing was one of them. Or that the man was guessing about a certain movie. I'm still not really sure how and what.

The moment the parents of Trent and Maddox were approaching their death moved me a bit. He slowly went blind and got Alzheimer's and she slowly became deaf. She cheated on him, he had already forgotten that. The message is therefore, never argue for too long, because that is a ''waste of time''.

And then the end... So they were testing certain drugs for different diseases and using the island's power, which was that you age faster. That way it doesn't take ages before you can see the results. I think it was originally conceived, but the execution could have been a little better.

All in all, this film gets a pass. 3 stars.
