A remake of the 1947 film with Tyrone Power, or a new interpretation of the same book from 1946. But del Toro must have watched the earlier film with Romina Power (daughter of the same Tyrone) as a cameo in the new film. A film noir with a gothic edge and del Toro is the right man for that. Slightly less mysterious than the predecessor, but the film is more balanced and visually definitely worth the effort.

The intrigue is a bit off, but the story still stands. Colorful characters and a cast worth seeing. You clearly recognize Guillermo del Toro's style, even if it is somewhat limited by the existing story. Only the ending is a bit less. This is partly due to the fact that I have already seen the older film, which always had something in mind when watching this film. Still a great film and glad I was able to see it in the cinema.

I couldn't pass up a new Del Toro in the halls. With his remake he paints an extremely atmospheric portrait of the fairground world in the 1940s. And it wouldn't be Del Toto if, as in almost every one of his films, he produced a strange creature. Not that his role is great, but the small cog fits nicely in the completely magical world of artists, acrobats and clairvoyants.

I don't know the old movie, nor the book, so I can't reference much. The plot is indeed very accessible. The long playing time is partly justified. Halfway through, a little dip after a very strong atmospheric beginning and a climax towards the end. The film is carried for me by the strong mysterious women Zeena (Toni Collette) and Dr. Litter (Cate Blanchet). Stanton (Bradley Cooper) hovers around it, opportunistic that he is, but not realizing who really dominates whom.

The atmosphere is partly magical, but gradually turns into mystery and darkness. The fairground world with its secrets also resides as a metaphor in the soul of man, where greed is central. Strong ending too, where tension and cinematography go hand in hand. Excellent film with excellent guest roles (Dafoe for example) and excellent dialogues. Nice to see this in the cinema!

The film lasts 2.5 hours and that is a bit long for this film that is just about a scammer. The length is partly due to the long introduction to the fairground world. So long, in fact, that it was a shame that it was let go at some point, because that first part is by far the most entertaining with all those characters. After that, the film really sinks in. At times still nice and atmospheric, but certainly the central romance between Cooper and Mara does not come out well, especially because of Mara, not my favorite actress anyway - she never convinces me. Cooper can't make it on his own either. And that piece is, also apart from the earlier part in the fairground world, too long for what the makers want to tell.

Visually all very nice, with a procession of nice characters but an unbalanced film for a long time, as if these are two films in one with completely different stories and atmosphere. A nice ending. Just at 3.0*.
