It does indeed remind a bit of Elle S'appelait Sarah, but I personally found the story less interesting. I was not able to discover the atmosphere of Lisbon in this film. This is because there is little filming in the streets themselves and only some peripheral characters are real Portuguese.

The cast is of course very impressive with names like Jeremy Irons, Christopher Lee, Bruno Ganz, Lena Olin, Charlotte Rampling and Mélanie Laurent. In itself it makes me curious about the book that only has 220 pages, but does not seem to have become a 1 on 1 film adaptation.

The film is full of wisdom and sometimes it goes a bit fast to get it right. Sometimes you don't have enough time to think about it. But in many words I saw the wisdom contained and I can enjoy it. The ending feels a bit cliche, but then again it isn't.

What an unbelievably dull cinema this is. With the predictable and clichéd frame story, the dull cinematography and the actors who can't get the dialogues out of their throats because of the terrible accents... even the piano pinging makes you fall asleep.

By a strange coincidence, a man in Bern meets a woman and thus comes across a book about a resistance hero in Lisbon. He travels to Lisbon and immerses himself in the life of this resistance hero. The film starts as a distant but good documentary about the life of the resistance hero and the story behind the fascist dictatorship in Portugal in the 1970s. But as the film progresses, the story becomes more and more personal and the film grows enormously. In the end, even the last scene is still beautiful. Good movie!
